Essential Oils 101

Essential Oils 101

essential-oils-1433694_960_720

Essential oils are a big deal in the natural community right now. I’m sure you’ve all heard someone talking about them recently. I know most of us crunchy mamas have a set at home. And for good reason. They are a fantastic tool to have in your arsenal.

I couldn’t go a day without my oils! I never leave the house without them in my bag. I use them for supporting my immune system, calming my anxiety and much more! They’re an amazing, natural way to manage your family’s health. If you’re interested in taking charge of your health as well as your family’s this post is for you!

I AM NOT AN AROMATHERAPIST OF DOCTOR. I’M JUST A MOM WHO HAS DONE HER OWN RESEARCH. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH OR CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING OILS ESPECIALLY ON CHILDREN!

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are often called the “life blood” of a plant. They are aromatic, volatile liquids that are found in most shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, seeds, and bushes. They have been used for thousands of years, some say they date back to 3,500 B.C.

Today people use essential oils in three main ways

  1. Aromatically
  2. Topically
  3. Ingestion

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS: AROMATICALLY

Recently there have been a number of studies published linking the benefits of essential oils both physically, and emotionally. You’ve probably noticed the link between scent and emotions. When we smell something When we smell something, we first process the input via the olfactory bulb, which is at the base of our brain and connected to the amygdala and hippocampus, the parts of our brain associated with emotion and memory.

Aromatherapy is basically inhaling essential oils. The easiest way to do this is with a diffuser. You can find links to the ones I use here and here. The diffuser works by breaking the oil into tiny molecules dispersing them throughout the air. An essential oil diffuser is a much healthier option compared to toxic air fresheners and candles.

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS: TOPICALLY

Applying essential oils topically is another way to get all the amazing benefits essential oils have to offer. Because of their molecular structure, essential oils are rapidly absorbed by the skin. When applied topically, it takes about 20 minutes for an oil to affect every cell in the body. The oil is then metabolized within a few hours.

The safest place to apply essential oils is the bottom of the feet because they contain thicker less sensitive skin. Most essential oils are too strong to be applied to the skin neat. Make sure you are always dilute them with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, or sweet almond oil. Dilution doesn’t make them less effective it just helps them spread over a larger surface area. I can not stress this enough! Always make sure you are following essential oil safety guidelines, especially when it comes to children.

Although diluting ratios vary depending on age and medical conditions the general rule of thumb is as follows:

  • Add 1-2 drops of essential oil per 1 teaspoon of carrier oil for adult
  • Add 1-2 drops of essential oil per 1 tablespoon of carrier oil for children over 2 years of age.( Never apply a “hot” oil such are oregano, cinnamon bark, or wintergreen to children. I also recommend to keep peppermint oil away from anyone under the age of 10)

essential-oil-1690887_960_720

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS: INGESTING

This should only be done with a health care professional with experience and essential oil education! Please remember essential oils are VERY potent. One drop of peppermint essential oil is equal to twenty-six cups of tea! You should educate yourself, and do what you’re comfortable with. Always make sure you are working with someone who is knowledgeable in using essential oils internally before you ingest them. DO NOT GIVE ESSENTIAL OILS INTERNALLY TO CHILDREN!

With all that being said I have used essential oils in my water from time to time, just to give it a little bit of flavor.

WHAT BRAND TO USE

There are hundreds of brands out there, I won’t go into too much detail but I will tell you to stay way from the oils sold in places like Wal-mart or even some health food stores. Do your research and compare different brands until you find the one you like. I personally use Doterra oils and LOVE them! You can purchase them here.

If you’d like more information on essential oils, check out the book modern essentials. It’s a fantastic source of information and can answer any question you have regarding essential oils. You can find it here.

Starting Baby on Solids

Starting Baby on Solids

I often get asked why my son hasn’t started solids yet, or what foods I want to start him on. So in this post, I’ll be going over why we haven’t started solids, when we plan to, and what foods we’ll start with. Enjoy!

WHY WE WAITED

My partner and I decided before Walter was even born that we were going to wait until he showed true signs of food readiness before we gave him anything other than breast milk. There are a thousand and one reasons why parents delay introducing solid into their babies diet. The most simple being babies only need breast milk ( or formula) to thrive. I know, it’s shocking! I’m sure someone’s mother in law just fell out of her seat. Unfortunately today it’s not uncommon for mothers and fathers to be encouraged by their doctor, or family to start solid food long before baby’s digestive system is ready. Introducing solids before baby is ready (especially grains) has been linked to food allergies later on in life. If you have a history of allergies in your family, the longer you wait the better.

WHY WE’LL NEVER GIVE OUR SON BABY CEREAL

We chose not to give our son baby cereals for two main reasons. Number one being that babies can’t digest grains before the age of one, and two because rice cereal has been known to contain arsenic! Parents are often encouraged to give their baby cereal to held them sleep better. There is no scientific evidence that supports that theory, in fact, many recent studies have disproved it altogether. The reason people think it helps babies sleep is because it binds their tummies. The main reason babies wake up at night is to poop. If you give them a bottle filled with cereal, they’ll theoretically sleep longer. Not because their tummy is full, and they’re satisfied but because they’re constipated. As for the arsenic, I won’t go into too much detail about why I don’t want my son eating that. I’m sure most people will agree we shouldn’t be feeding our children a deadly poison. If you’d like to read more about it on your own here is a link to the FDA website.baby semolina isolated on white background

WHEN WILL WE FEED OUR SON SOLIDS

The short answer is when he’s ready. I know that’s not the answer you guys are looking for so I’ll elaborate. I believe no baby should receive solid food before the age of six months. the AAP even states for optimal health and wellness babies should be breastfed for the first six months of their life. With that being said we obviously weren’t going to feed our son anything other than breast milk before he was six months old. Along with that, we chose to wait until he showed other signs of food readiness. For example:

  • A desire for something other than milk. Babies often show a desire to play with food before they are actually ready to eat it. I’ll just take a second to mention my usual disclaimer, of course, every baby is different, use your intuition when it comes to feeding your baby. Your little on may show signs of food readiness long another. Always do what YOU think is best.
  • An ability to pick up small objects. I believe it’s important to allow our little ones to feed themselves, in order for them to do so they’ll need to have developed their pincher grasp. This is when baby uses his thumb and forefinger to pick things up.
  • The ability to sit on their own. This is extremely important because this skill is needed to allow baby to swallow properly. Wait until your little one can sit on his own for several minutes before introducing solids.
  • Last but not least baby should have lost his tongue thrust reflex. This is the reflex that causes a baby to immediately push anything thicker than milk out of their mouth. I’m sure you’ve all seen a mom feeding their baby a jar of baby food and the little one immediately pushes it out of their mouth and mom scoops it up with a spoon and shoves it back in. All for the baby to spit it right back out again. If your little one does this, it may be a sign he isn’t ready for solids yet.

WHAT FOODS WILL WE START WITH

Mostly likely we will start with avocado. Mainly because when it’s ripe is soft enough for Walter to chew without it having to be cooked first. Plus it’s high in fat which is fantastic for brain development. We plan on offering him other soft ripe fruits such as bananas, mango, and peaches. I often hear parents talk about how they are afraid of offering their baby too many sweet fruits, fearing they will only eat sugary foods and no crave the savory taste of vegetables. I’m not worried about this but to debunk this theory let discuss the natural craving for sugar. We are by nature fruit eaters. I know this comes as a surprise to most but just stick with me. Breast milk is naturally sweet, whereas cow’s milk isn’t. This is because humans are designed to have a diet high in sugars (natural sugars of course). Humans thrive in the tropics, where natural tree ripened fruit is the most abundant source of calories. In our natural environment, we would be drawn to fruits because it’s much easier to sit under a mango tree and eat until your heart’s delight than it is the hunt, kill, skin, and eat an animal.

whatever food your choose to start with is up to you. However, I do want to stress the importance of seeking out the highest quality, organic food possible. It is incredibly important to feed our little one’s food free of pesticides and chemicals, not only is it better for their bodies it’s also better for our environment. Shop at farmers markets whenever you can. This is the best way to get organic, nutrient dense foods. Plus you’ll be supporting a local small business 😉

I do want to stress that before the age of one breast milk should be your child’s primary source of calories. I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying “food before one is just for fun.”

However, you choose to feed your child always remember they are a reflection of ourselves. If you want your child to love fruits and vegetables YOU have to love them! One of my favorite bloggers once said “If you are a mom or dad who is trying to feed your kids healthy whole plant foods, and are surrounded by negativity and discouragement to do so, I encourage you to press forward. You are not alone. You will never influence the world by trying to be like it.” -Ellen Fisher.

If you’re expecting, or if or looking for more natural products this is the post for you. Enjoy! Oh and to make things a little easier for you I’ve included links to where you can buy all the products listed.

1. The Windi

2q-3

These little beauties are a life saver. I seriously don’t know what I would have done without them. When my son was dealing with terrible gas pain I would use a windi and it seconds my little guy would be gas free. They are safe, effective, and a better option than giving your little one medicine (in my opinion).

2.Gripe Water

16200475

If you’re looking for something to help with more that just gas I would try gripe water. This is great for colic and hiccups! It’s made from all natural ingredients which gives me peace of mind. Whenever my little guy was having a hard time with hiccups, I would gibe him a little bit of this and poof they were gone!

3. Baby Carrier

A baby carrier is a must-have for any new mom in my opinion! This helps a ton with getting things done around the house, or just getting in some extra snuggles. If you have a baby that doesn’t like to be put down popping them in a carrier meets their needs as well as helping mama keep her sanity! They one I’m wearing here is a chimparoo woven wrap. I rented this from my local baby wearing group and I love it! I’ve tried a few different carriers and woven wraps are my favorite so far. A few other great ones are ring slings and soft structured carriers.

4. Coconut Oil

spt-00200-1

The last thing on the list coconut oil. This is my go to for EVERYTHING! I used this when I first started nursing, and it helped a ton with sore nipples. I also mix it with a little bit of breast milk and use it as diaper rash cream. Coconut oil is the only thing I use for my little guy as far as a moisturizer.

I hope this little list helps you find some natural baby products. Each and every one of these products are staples in our household, I seriously couldn’t live without them. 5 REASON YOU SHOULD DRINK LEMON WATER

Hello my sweet sweet friends! I’m glad you’re back. Today I’m continuing the theme of healthy habits. I hope these tips will help you all lead a healthy lifestyle. Well, on to the good stuff.

2. It can help lower blood pressure

The high levels of potassium found if lemons can not only lower your blood pressure, but it can also improve brain function.  If you want to improve your focus, have an afternoon cup of lemon water or tea. Whatever floats your boat.

3. It balances your ph

Lemons are one of the most alkaline foods out there, because of this lemons can help create an alkaline state in your body. This helps your body restore itself to homeostasis. This is extremely important because and acid environment within our bodies creates a breeding ground for cancer.

6 HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE NEW YEAR.

6 HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE NEW YEAR.

Hello my sweet sweet friends. I’m glad you could join me for this mid-week blog post. I’d love some feed back from you guys. Please let me know if you enjoyed this  extra post, or if you prefer I posted once a week.

So I’m sure a lot of you are a lot like me around this time of year; you set a goal to become a healthier person. Well if you are like me, you’ve probably fell off that wagon once, or twice, or seven hundred times . But hey-new year new you, right? This year I’m determined to stick to my goal of getting healthier, and I figured I should share my favorite healthy tips with all of you guys!

If you’re interested in any of the products I’m talking about today, I’ve included links to all of them. Just click the blue works to be taken to iherb.com where you can purchase any of this products. The links will open in a new tab, to make it easy for you to come back 😉

1.Use coconut oil every day!

I know, I know you’ve been hearing people talk about coconut oil for years now. Just bare with me on this guys, I mean if it wasn’t truly amazing would everyone be talking about it?! Honestly coconut oil is one of the best multi purpose health product out there. It can be used for almost anything. It’s great for oil pulling, DIY toothpaste, I even rub it on my dog’s teeth and gums. It works as a wonderful skin and hair moisturizer, and you can even cook with it. Seriously you can really use it for almost anything! Plus it is high in a ton  of nutrients. When looking for coconut oil look for an organic, cold pressed, unrefined, virgin oil. The brand Nutiva is great!

2. Eat hemp seeds daily!

Hemp seeds are rich in fatty acids, they’re rich in minerals, and hemp seeds are also a wonderful source of easily digestible protein. Because of all this they can help support cardiovascular health. Try putting them in salads, or even making your own hemp milk. Just make sure you don’t put them on anything hot. I like to make sure I always have some Nutiva organic hemp seeds in the fridge!

3. Always have a snack with You!

Making sure you always have a snack with you is so important. I always have a bar with me either in my purse, or diaper bag. Having a snack on me not only helps keep my blood sugar stable, but also keeps me from getting hangry! When you’re out and about BRING A SNACK WITH YOU! This way you won’t be tempted to buy fast food because you’re starving. These Luna bars are the ones I always have on me. The lemon zest flavor is the best ( if I do say so myself) but they have a ton of flavors for you to try.

4. Swap table salt for Himalayan salt!

Conventional table salt is highly processed, and during its manufacturing it is often bleached and has anti- clotting agents and artificial iodine added to it. As most of us know high levels of table salt can cause health problems, since sodium is an essential part of the human diet switching to Himalayan salt is a much healthier alternative. Unlike table salt Himalayan salt is rich in 80+ minerals, high in natural iodine, regulates blood pressure, balances electrolytes, and can reduce muscle cramps. If that wasn’t enough it’s pink too! This Himala Salt brand is a good choice, plus it comes in a refillable grinder!

5. Eat more fermented food!

Fermented foods are great for gut health. They are an amazing source of pro-biotics, B vitamins, and immune boosting nutrients. They aid in good digestion, and can help clear some skin conditions. Our gut is where our immune system lives, so a healthy guy equals a healthy body overall. Try adding foods like kimchi, or sauerkraut to your diet. If you like fizzy drinks ,kombucha is a great alternative to sugar filled sodas.

6.Add more turmeric and cinnamon to your diet!

Turmeric and cinnamon are amazing spices. Not only will they add wonderful flavor to your food, but they are packed with tons of health properties too! Turmeric contains curcumin a powerful anti inflammatory, and antioxidant. Turmeric is great for heart health and if you’re suffering from pain you can take a concentrated dose of turmeric in capsule form. Gaia herbs turmeric supreme is like natures ibuprofen! When adding turmeric to food try taking it with black pepper, and some healthy fats (like coconut oil) for best absorption.

Like turmeric, cinnamon is a powerful anti inflammatory, and antioxidant. It’s also anti microbial, can lower blood sugar, and improve heart health. However all cinnamon is NOT created equal. The cinnamon found in most stores is cassia cinnamon also known as Chinese cinnamon. This type does not hold all of cinnamon’s amazing health properties. You want to make sure you’re using Ceylon cinnamon in order to gain all the benefits. Ceylon cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka, and has a much sweeter taste and contains the true health benefits.

If you made it this far, I’m glad and I hope you take something away from this post. These are just a few of my favorite health tips. If you’re interested in more check in later this week for more! Also make sure you subscribe so you never miss a post!

5 Toxic Chemicals Found in Everyday Products.

5 Toxic Chemicals Found in Everyday Products.

Well We all know I love natural products! When we’re faced with so many products that are filled with harmful ingredients, who wouldn’t!

Like a lot of people out there I would become dizzy and often very sick when I used conventional cleaning products. In fact, a few years ago, while cleaning my bathroom I almost fainted because of the fumes! That’s when I deiced I would take a look at the ingredients list of the products I was using. I’m sure this is no shock to you, but I didn’t recognize a single ingredient, so I started doing some research. What I found was terrifying, and if I’m being honest it enraged me. How could companies get away with putting these toxic chemicals in their products! After I made this discovery I was determined to make a change. I’ve been using natural products even since, and I’m loving it! I’m loving it so much, I felt compelled to share my knowledge with others. Below is a list of just a FEW of the many chemicals that have very harmful side effects, and ways to avoid them. Enjoy!

  1. BPA

Bisphenol a (BPA) was created in the 1891,and in the late 1930s it was discovered that BPA acted as a synthetic estrogen. Because of it’s ability to mimic estrogenbit was meant to be used as birth control. Soon after the birth control plans failed scientists discovered BPA could be used to make plastics hard. Since then it’s been used in everything from plastic food container, to baby bottles and has been linked to various forms of cancer, as well as reproductive problems and heart disease.

How to Avoid It: Since BPA is found in so many items, it can be hard to avoid. To minimize your family’s exposure, avoid plastics that are marked with “PC” or recycling label #7. BPA is also commonly used in receipt paper, so forgo taking receipts whenever possible.

  1. DIOXIN

Dioxin is a carcinogen that can easily build up in the body. It is cause by manufacturing processes such as pesticide manufacturing, and the chlorine bleaching of paper products, and feminine hygiene products. It’s linked to immune and reproductive disorders such as endometriosis.

How to Avoid It: This toxin is commonly found in animal products especially fish, milk, and eggs, So try eating fewer animal products. For all my ladies, out there dioxin is found in conventional pads, and tampons. To avoid this try buying organic feminine hygiene products or consider using a menstrual cup to help your health and the planet!

  1. PHTHALATES

Phthalates are used in hundreds of products throughout our homes. This chemical helps create flexible, durable, and resistant products such as flexible PVC. Because this chemical is used in so many products it can be difficult to avoid.

How to Avoid It: This chemical is commonly found in toys, plastic food containers and plastic wrap that are made from PVC. Phthalates can also be found in personal care items such as lotion, body wash etc. They are sometimes listed as “fragrances” so be sure to check the labels. Try switching to fragrance free products, or products that are scented with essential oils instead.

  1. PERCHLORATE

The chemical Perchlorate is commonly found in rocket fuel. This component can severely disrupt thyroid function. Decreased thyroid function can cause anything from fatigue, and weight gain to a slowed heart rate and depression.

How to Avoid It: Perchlorate is most often found on fresh produce, and in milk, so avoiding it altogether isn’t possible. You can try cutting out dairy, and buying organic when you can.

  1. PARABENS

Parabens are commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products to prevent the growth of bacteria These harmful chemical can mimic estrogen in the body. Exposure to high levels of parabens is now being linked to the development of breast cancer.

How to Avoid It: Switch to paraben free products, and I can’t stress this enough READ THE LABELS! Companies can say a product is paraben free but when you read the ingredients list it’s a different story. So make sure you always read the labels. If you’d like to make sure your products don’t contain parabens make them yourself. There are tons of fun DIYs for everything from body lotion, laundry detergent.

If you made it this far I’m glad and I hope you found some interesting information. If you have anything in your home that contain these chemicals get rid of them immediately! I’ll be writing a blog post all about my favorite natural alternatives to conventional personal care, and cleaning products. If You’re interested be sure you’re check back for a list of AMAZING companies, and great DIYs.

Also, I’ll be posting a special mid-week post that will include a few of my favorite health tips! Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss a thing!

WHY WE DON’T VACCINATE

WHY WE DON’T VACCINATE

Well hello, my sweet, sweet friends! I’m glad you’re back for another one of my crazy blog posts.

I guess I should be honest and tell you guys I debated if I should make this post at all. After a lot of thought, I decided I would go ahead with this post. I know some of you may not agree with my family’s choice not to vaccinate, and that’s okay. I’m not writing this to convince you of anything, I’m simply making this post to share MY reasons for not vaccinating my son.

To the people who don’t agree with my choice please keep in mind I’m a person with feelings just like you, I welcome your feedback but if you have any negative comments please keep them to yourself. And to the family’s that are just like mine, know that you are not alone, I understand your struggles, and I will stand tall beside you in this fight. At the end of the day, agree with me or not we are all parents who are trying to do the very best for our children. Please keep that in mind. Now on to the good stuff

so….Why don’t I vaccinate?

THE VACCINE SCHEDULE

To help keep this post as short as possible ( yeah I know I basically wrote a book) I’ll just be comparing the CDC recommended vaccination schedule of 1995 to the one the CDC recommends today. If you’d like to take a look at all the vaccine schedules from 1995 until today I’ve included a handy- dandy link that will take you straight to the CDC website. If you’d like to go straight to the vaccine schedules I’m looking at today just click the year you’d like to view and it will take you right to the charts.(You’re welcome).
In 1995 it was recommended children receive at total of 19 vaccinations over a 12-year span. Today (the CDC still recommends the 2015 schedule for today’s children) the CDC recommend children receive a total of 28 vaccinations BEFORE age 12. This number DOES NOT INCLUDE the vaccines recommended for 12-18-year old children or the pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine. With those vaccines included the number becomes a staggering 35 vaccinations by age 18. So as you can see the number of recommended vaccines has more than doubled in the past 22 years. I personally found this unsettling. I was not comfortable injecting my child with 35 doses of 15 different viruses. Once I saw how many vaccines my son was supposed to have I started to do more research, and what I discovered was terrifying.

VACCINE INGREDIENTS

Don’t worry I’m not going to bombard you with a huge list of mystery chemical and ingredients. I’ll keep my list here short, but if you’re interested in the ingredients of the recommended childhood vaccines I’ve made it easy for you. Just click this link and it will take you right to it (again, you’re welcome).
So here are just a FEW of the ingredients in vaccines and why the CDC says they need to be in them.

Aluminum gels or salts of aluminum which are added as adjuvants to help the vaccine stimulate a better response. Adjuvants help promote an earlier, more potent response, and more persistent immune response to the vaccine.

Antibiotics which are added to some vaccines to prevent the growth of germs (bacteria) during production and storage of the vaccine. No vaccine produced in the United States contains penicillin.

Egg protein is found in influenza and yellow fever vaccines, which are prepared using chicken eggs. Ordinarily, persons who are able to eat eggs or egg products safely can receive these vaccines. ( This is also found in the MMR)

Formaldehyde is used to inactivate bacterial products for toxoid vaccines, (these are vaccines that use an inactive bacterial toxin to produce immunity.) It is also used to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might contaminate the vaccine during production. Most formaldehyde is removed from the vaccine before it is packaged.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and 2-phenoxy-ethanol which are used as stabilizers in a few vaccines to help the vaccine remain unchanged when the vaccine is exposed to heat, light, acidity, or humidity.

Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative that is added to vials of vaccine that contain more than one dose to prevent contamination and growth of potentially harmful bacteria.
We all know that these substances not only unhealthy but can also be incredibly dangerous. So let me ask you..why are we injecting these into our children?

VACCINES LINKED TO AUTISM

I know, I know this is a touchy subject.I’m sure this is where a few of you are going to sign off. I understand, trust me I really do. Some of you probably think I’m crazy, honestly a few years ago I would have thought I was crazy too. So for your sake and mine, I’ll keep this part short. Please go watch the movie Vaxxed! Believe me, it’s eye opening. For your convenience, I made yet another link for you. Click right here to be taken to the vaxxed website.
I’d like to end by saying thanks for sticking around if you made it this far. If you were on the fence about vaccines or even if you weren’t I hope you gained something from the tiny bit of information I shared with you today. If there’s one thing I want you to take from this post it’s this, Please don’t always believe what you’re told. Do your own research. I know as parents we’re faced with a million difficult decisions, but like I said before we’re all just trying to do the very best for our children. So please I implore you, gather all the information you possibly can; your child’s future may depend on it.

Disclaimer: I am by NO way saying this is what’s right for everyone. I understand different things work for different families. This is just what my family chose to do. I am by NO means saying anyone is a bad parent/person if they chose to vaccine their child. DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU.
