Zero Waste Lifestyle

business-1869127_960_720

I’ve gotten so many questions about my zero waste lifestyle, I figured I write a post about it. The most common question I get asked is why do I do it? Well, I do it because I’m a tree-hugging hippie of course. Well at least that what everyone things when I tell them I try (Try being a key work here) to life a life without producing trash. Honestly, I do it because I want to create a better world for my son. I want to inspire him as well as others to live a more sustainable life. Wow, I guess they’re right, I am a tree -hugging hippie.

So what is zero waste?

There are a ton of different ways to interpret what a “zero waste lifestyle” is. To make it easy I’m going to define it as living a sustainable lifestyle, as well as being conscious of the impact you have on the environment.

I want to stress that it’s impossible to live completely zero waste. This lifestyle isn’t all of nothing. If you’re interested in transitioning to a zero waste lifestyle it’s important to take baby steps and to not be too hard on yourself. I’m including a list of a few things you can do to start transitioning to a more sustainable life.

Is zero waste difficult?

People are constantly telling me they couldn’t possibly be zero waste simply because it’s too hard. The truth is that this lifestyle is incredibly easy and simple. It just requires a little more planning ahead. I’ve found that living this was really helped minimize my stress, as well as save me money. Since I try to avoid things in packaging, I save a ton of money because I’m not paying the markups companies charge. I encourage everyone to try living zero waste of five days. I’m sure you’ll be surprised by how easy it is.

Attachment Parenting

Attachment Parenting

For me, parenting has been a very complex journey. It’s the hardest thing I’ve even done, however it has brought me a tremendous amount of joy and happiness. I’ve found that as parents we all face the same struggles, and we all hope to reap the rewards of confident, successful, and happy children. We are all just trying to do our best.

There are so many choices to make from the food you feed your children to the way they sleep. All of this can be incredibly overwhelming. I know so many families who choose to meet their children’s needs in vastly different ways. For me, I have chosen to parent outside of the norm.

My partner and I chose a more natural form of parenting. For us that means making informed decisions about our son’s medical care and choosing a holistic approach whenever possible, co-sleeping, extended breastfeeding, and many more decisions that don’t fall in line with a more traditional, adult-centered style of parenting.

I know that all parents get negative feedback on their style of parenting. I have encountered many people who don’t agree with my decisions and that’s okay. Below you’ll find the ways I stay sane when it feels like almost everyone has something to say about how I’ve chosen to raise my son. Enjoy.

Seek out like-minded people

I’ve found that online support from facebook groups is my saving grace.  This is my safe space to discuss information with parents who share the same beliefs I do. This applies to any style of parent. Find people with similar views, and hang out with them. Trust me it will keep you from pulling your hair out.

Have research to back you up

This one mainly applies to my crunchy mamas. Whenever you chose holistic care over more traditional care people are going to give you shit. Therefore I am always seeking out new information to help me feel more confident with my decision. The more I read, the more I learn and the better I feel when talking to people who don’t agree with my decisions.

image1

Don’t let other people’s thoughts influence your beliefs

You can’t please everyone. You will always encounter someone who doesn’t agree with you. Try your hardest to offer information in a calm respectful manner. If that doesn’t work simply walk away. Always remember you don’t have to justify your decisions to anyone, and most importantly you don’t have to argue! If they don’t like it, that’s their issue, not yours.

It’s not always the most convenient but it’s worth it.

When I first read about attachment parenting I knew that was the way I wanted to raise my children. It’s just what made sense to me. Along the road I’ve debated my choice many times but I’ve never given up. My partner and I believe this is what id best for our son, that doesn’t mean it’s what is easiest for us. Trust me We’ve struggled. People told us we were crazy when we decided to co-sleep, they called us baby killers because we don’t vaccinate, they told us our son would hate not being circumcised, and they swore up and down we’d regret not having a stroller. What I trying to say is we’ve dealt with our share of hate and it hasn’t been easy. Through it all we’ve stuck to our guns, and trusted the process, because of that we have a beautiful, happy, healthy six-month-old son.

If any of your are parents and are struggling know that you’re not alone.Trust your instincts, you know more than you think you do.

Crunchy Mama Must Haves

Crunchy Mama Must Haves

Hello my sweet sweet friends! I’m glad you’re back. I decided to post a list of my top crunchy must haves. When I was pregnant I read tons of these to get an idea of what I might need for baby. If you’re expecting, or if or looking for more natural products this is the post for you. Enjoy! Oh and to make things a little easier for you I’ve included links to where you can buy all the products listed.

1. The Windi

2q-3

These little beauties are a life saver. I seriously don’t know what I would have done without them. When my son was dealing with terrible gas pain I would use a windi and it seconds my little guy would be gas free. They are safe, effective, and a better option than giving your little one medicine (in my opinion).

2.Gripe Water

16200475

If you’re looking for something to help with more that just gas I would try gripe water. This is great for colic and hiccups! It’s made from all natural ingredients which gives me peace of mind. Whenever my little guy was having a hard time with hiccups, I would gibe him a little bit of this and poof they were gone!

3. Baby Carrier

16602596_216375402163500_34902187221094095_n

A baby carrier is a must-have for any new mom in my opinion! This helps a ton with getting things done around the house, or just getting in some extra snuggles. If you have a baby that doesn’t like to be put down popping them in a carrier meets their needs as well as helping mama keep her sanity! They one I’m wearing here is a chimparoo woven wrap. I rented this from my local baby wearing group and I love it! I’ve tried a few different carriers and woven wraps are my favorite so far. A few other great ones are ring slings and soft structured carriers.

4. Coconut Oil

spt-00200-1

The last thing on the list coconut oil. This is my go to for EVERYTHING! I used this when I first started nursing, and it helped a ton with sore nipples. I also mix it with a little bit of breast milk and use it as diaper rash cream. Coconut oil is the only thing I use for my little guy as far as a moisturizer.

I hope this little list helps you find some natural baby products. Each and every one of these products are staples in our household, I seriously couldn’t live without them. Make sure you check back on Sunday for a new post. If you haven’t already make sure you subscribe. When you enter your email you’ll automatically get notifications when I have a new post.  Make sure you post some of your baby must-haves in the comments!

WHY WE LEFT OUR SON INTACT

WHY WE LEFT OUR SON INTACT

Originally this post was supposed to go up on Wednesday, I’m sorry for the delay.  I spent a lot of time debating if I was going to make this post at all. I wasn’t sure if I could handle the potential backlash. After careful consideration, I decided I would go ahead with the post.

Someone very close to me told me “If you believe in something this much you shouldn’t be afraid to share it.” So I’m making this post for all the new moms who are debating circumcision. I hope my story helps you find the answers you’re looking for.

DISCLAIMER: This is just my families story. I am by no means saying you should make the same choice we do. Please DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY! Also, I am in no way trying to make those who did circumcise their sons feel guilty, or saying they are bad parents.  I will be including pictures or procedures, links to videos of the procedure being performed on newborns. This content may be disturbing to some viewers. Please proceed with caution

So I guess I’ll start by telling you all the definition of circumcise. It’s defined on Merriam-Webster as “to cut off the foreskin of (a male) or the prepuce or clitoris and labia minora of (a female)”.  Yes, you read that right females have foreskin as well, but more on that later. Next, We’ll discuss why people circumcise. The three main reasons are a religion (however for your sake and mine I won’t be discussing religious reasons in depth), medical necessity, and culture.

Religion: Like I said I won’t be going into to much detail here. Just know people circumcise their children for religious reasons. To my knowledge, this is found in most religions, but Judaism is the most common. If you’re a person of faith and anything I’ve stated here is incorrect please feel free to correct me.

Medical necessity: This is where things can get a little confusing. In the past, it was believed circumcision prevented STD transmission, penile cancer, UTI’s. More recent studies have found this to be false.

Culture: In most countries, newborn baby boys are NOT  circumcised. This is really only an American custom. In our society intact men are seen as dirty, or ugly. We’ve become so accustomed to seeing circumcised penises that men left in their natural state are ostracized. If you’d like more info about the rates of newborn circumcision click this link.

Now that we’ve learned a little bit about circumcision lets get into why my partner and I chose not to circumcise.

20121112-211801

Honestly, it started with this picture. I stumbled across this while researching circumcision and I couldn’t stomach the thought of my little baby being strapped into this thing. The thought of him being in pain because of something I wanted shook me to my core. His body = His choice.

After I found this picture I looked into a video called elephant in the hospital I’ve included a link if you’d like to watch it for yourself. This documentary opened my eyes even more. I started to think about my son’s basic human rights. How could I cut something off of him without his permission? I’ll put it like this, If a doctor came to you and said your baby would look a lot better without his toes would you cut them off? Of course not! That sound insane, so why are we so willing to cut off a part of our child’s penis? Why do we believe boys are born needing to be fixed? I soon learned it wasn’t just boys we had done this to. Young girls were also subjected to genital mutilation (FGM). The practice of FGM was used from the 1800s until the late 1970s to cure everything from female masturbation to lesbianism; It was finally outlawed in the US in 1996. All of that sounds insane, doesn’t it?  We can’t imagine strapping a little girl down to a table and letting a doctor cut off parts of her genitalia, so why are we doing it to our sons!  More information about FGM can be found here.

The more I researched the angrier I became. Then I learned that some babies actually die from complications of this barbaric procedure. A recent study conducted found that 117 boys die annually from circumcision-related complications. You can read more about the study here.  The fact that male genital mutilation hasn’t been outlawed based on those numbers is astounding. Here an example to help you put things into perspective. Remember drop-side cribs? In the late 2000s, it was reported that children were dropping the side of their cribs and either suffocating or strangling themselves. The CPSC banned drop-side cribs after 38 reported deaths. You can find more on that right here.  Once I discovered this information I knew circumcision was not the right choice for my family.

Like I said in the beginning, this is just my family’s story. I’m not trying to make anyone feeling guilty about their decision to circumcise or not to. My only hope is that this will open people’s eyes a little. Do your own research and come to your own conclusion. Circumcision wasn’t the right choice for my family. DO WHAT’S BEST FOR YOURS.

I’ve included a few extra links to videos of the procedure being done on a newborn baby. I’ll go ahead and warn you it’s graphic. View discretion is advised.

5 REASON YOU SHOULD DRINK LEMON WATER

Hello my sweet sweet friends! I’m glad you’re back. Today I’m continuing the theme of healthy habits. I hope these tips will help you all lead a healthy lifestyle. Well, on to the good stuff.

  1. It helps boost your immune system.

2. It can help lower blood pressure

The high levels of potassium found if lemons can not only lower your blood pressure, but it can also improve brain function.  If you want to improve your focus, have an afternoon cup of lemon water or tea. Whatever floats your boat.

3. It balances your ph

Lemons are one of the most alkaline foods out there, because of this lemons can help create an alkaline state in your body. This helps your body restore itself to homeostasis. This is extremely important because and acid environment within our bodies creates a breeding ground for cancer.

6 HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE NEW YEAR.

6 HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE NEW YEAR.

Hello my sweet sweet friends. I’m glad you could join me for this mid-week blog post. I’d love some feed back from you guys. Please let me know if you enjoyed this  extra post, or if you prefer I posted once a week.

So I’m sure a lot of you are a lot like me around this time of year; you set a goal to become a healthier person. Well if you are like me, you’ve probably fell off that wagon once, or twice, or seven hundred times . But hey-new year new you, right? This year I’m determined to stick to my goal of getting healthier, and I figured I should share my favorite healthy tips with all of you guys!

If you’re interested in any of the products I’m talking about today, I’ve included links to all of them. Just click the blue works to be taken to iherb.com where you can purchase any of this products. The links will open in a new tab, to make it easy for you to come back 😉

1.Use coconut oil every day!

I know, I know you’ve been hearing people talk about coconut oil for years now. Just bare with me on this guys, I mean if it wasn’t truly amazing would everyone be talking about it?! Honestly coconut oil is one of the best multi purpose health product out there. It can be used for almost anything. It’s great for oil pulling, DIY toothpaste, I even rub it on my dog’s teeth and gums. It works as a wonderful skin and hair moisturizer, and you can even cook with it. Seriously you can really use it for almost anything! Plus it is high in a ton  of nutrients. When looking for coconut oil look for an organic, cold pressed, unrefined, virgin oil. The brand Nutiva is great!

2. Eat hemp seeds daily!

Hemp seeds are rich in fatty acids, they’re rich in minerals, and hemp seeds are also a wonderful source of easily digestible protein. Because of all this they can help support cardiovascular health. Try putting them in salads, or even making your own hemp milk. Just make sure you don’t put them on anything hot. I like to make sure I always have some Nutiva organic hemp seeds in the fridge!

3. Always have a snack with You!

Making sure you always have a snack with you is so important. I always have a bar with me either in my purse, or diaper bag. Having a snack on me not only helps keep my blood sugar stable, but also keeps me from getting hangry! When you’re out and about BRING A SNACK WITH YOU! This way you won’t be tempted to buy fast food because you’re starving. These Luna bars are the ones I always have on me. The lemon zest flavor is the best ( if I do say so myself) but they have a ton of flavors for you to try.

4. Swap table salt for Himalayan salt!

Conventional table salt is highly processed, and during its manufacturing it is often bleached and has anti- clotting agents and artificial iodine added to it. As most of us know high levels of table salt can cause health problems, since sodium is an essential part of the human diet switching to Himalayan salt is a much healthier alternative. Unlike table salt Himalayan salt is rich in 80+ minerals, high in natural iodine, regulates blood pressure, balances electrolytes, and can reduce muscle cramps. If that wasn’t enough it’s pink too! This Himala Salt brand is a good choice, plus it comes in a refillable grinder!

5. Eat more fermented food!

Fermented foods are great for gut health. They are an amazing source of pro-biotics, B vitamins, and immune boosting nutrients. They aid in good digestion, and can help clear some skin conditions. Our gut is where our immune system lives, so a healthy guy equals a healthy body overall. Try adding foods like kimchi, or sauerkraut to your diet. If you like fizzy drinks ,kombucha is a great alternative to sugar filled sodas.

6.Add more turmeric and cinnamon to your diet!

Turmeric and cinnamon are amazing spices. Not only will they add wonderful flavor to your food, but they are packed with tons of health properties too! Turmeric contains curcumin a powerful anti inflammatory, and antioxidant. Turmeric is great for heart health and if you’re suffering from pain you can take a concentrated dose of turmeric in capsule form. Gaia herbs turmeric supreme is like natures ibuprofen! When adding turmeric to food try taking it with black pepper, and some healthy fats (like coconut oil) for best absorption.

Like turmeric, cinnamon is a powerful anti inflammatory, and antioxidant. It’s also anti microbial, can lower blood sugar, and improve heart health. However all cinnamon is NOT created equal. The cinnamon found in most stores is cassia cinnamon also known as Chinese cinnamon. This type does not hold all of cinnamon’s amazing health properties. You want to make sure you’re using Ceylon cinnamon in order to gain all the benefits. Ceylon cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka, and has a much sweeter taste and contains the true health benefits.

If you made it this far, I’m glad and I hope you take something away from this post. These are just a few of my favorite health tips. If you’re interested in more check in later this week for more! Also make sure you subscribe so you never miss a post!

5 Toxic Chemicals Found in Everyday Products.

5 Toxic Chemicals Found in Everyday Products.

Well We all know I love natural products! When we’re faced with so many products that are filled with harmful ingredients, who wouldn’t!

Like a lot of people out there I would become dizzy and often very sick when I used conventional cleaning products. In fact, a few years ago, while cleaning my bathroom I almost fainted because of the fumes! That’s when I deiced I would take a look at the ingredients list of the products I was using. I’m sure this is no shock to you, but I didn’t recognize a single ingredient, so I started doing some research. What I found was terrifying, and if I’m being honest it enraged me. How could companies get away with putting these toxic chemicals in their products! After I made this discovery I was determined to make a change. I’ve been using natural products even since, and I’m loving it! I’m loving it so much, I felt compelled to share my knowledge with others. Below is a list of just a FEW of the many chemicals that have very harmful side effects, and ways to avoid them. Enjoy!

  1. BPA

Bisphenol a (BPA) was created in the 1891,and in the late 1930s it was discovered that BPA acted as a synthetic estrogen. Because of it’s ability to mimic estrogenbit was meant to be used as birth control. Soon after the birth control plans failed scientists discovered BPA could be used to make plastics hard. Since then it’s been used in everything from plastic food container, to baby bottles and has been linked to various forms of cancer, as well as reproductive problems and heart disease.

How to Avoid It: Since BPA is found in so many items, it can be hard to avoid. To minimize your family’s exposure, avoid plastics that are marked with “PC” or recycling label #7. BPA is also commonly used in receipt paper, so forgo taking receipts whenever possible.

  1. DIOXIN

Dioxin is a carcinogen that can easily build up in the body. It is cause by manufacturing processes such as pesticide manufacturing, and the chlorine bleaching of paper products, and feminine hygiene products. It’s linked to immune and reproductive disorders such as endometriosis.

How to Avoid It: This toxin is commonly found in animal products especially fish, milk, and eggs, So try eating fewer animal products. For all my ladies, out there dioxin is found in conventional pads, and tampons. To avoid this try buying organic feminine hygiene products or consider using a menstrual cup to help your health and the planet!

  1. PHTHALATES

Phthalates are used in hundreds of products throughout our homes. This chemical helps create flexible, durable, and resistant products such as flexible PVC. Because this chemical is used in so many products it can be difficult to avoid.

How to Avoid It: This chemical is commonly found in toys, plastic food containers and plastic wrap that are made from PVC. Phthalates can also be found in personal care items such as lotion, body wash etc. They are sometimes listed as “fragrances” so be sure to check the labels. Try switching to fragrance free products, or products that are scented with essential oils instead.

  1. PERCHLORATE

The chemical Perchlorate is commonly found in rocket fuel. This component can severely disrupt thyroid function. Decreased thyroid function can cause anything from fatigue, and weight gain to a slowed heart rate and depression.

How to Avoid It: Perchlorate is most often found on fresh produce, and in milk, so avoiding it altogether isn’t possible. You can try cutting out dairy, and buying organic when you can.

  1. PARABENS

Parabens are commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products to prevent the growth of bacteria These harmful chemical can mimic estrogen in the body. Exposure to high levels of parabens is now being linked to the development of breast cancer.

How to Avoid It: Switch to paraben free products, and I can’t stress this enough READ THE LABELS! Companies can say a product is paraben free but when you read the ingredients list it’s a different story. So make sure you always read the labels. If you’d like to make sure your products don’t contain parabens make them yourself. There are tons of fun DIYs for everything from body lotion, laundry detergent.

If you made it this far I’m glad and I hope you found some interesting information. If you have anything in your home that contain these chemicals get rid of them immediately! I’ll be writing a blog post all about my favorite natural alternatives to conventional personal care, and cleaning products. If You’re interested be sure you’re check back for a list of AMAZING companies, and great DIYs.

Also, I’ll be posting a special mid-week post that will include a few of my favorite health tips! Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss a thing!
